A BOARD DEMONSTRATING LACQUER TECHNIQUES
Meiji Period (Late 19th - early 20th Century)
The rectangular board with three horizontal panels, the top one showing the stages of the shita-ji [the foundation layers], consisting of unripe persimmon juice, cloth filled with urushi [raw lacquer] and burnt powdered clay and a final coat of urushi, the second panel with the stages in making the black ground, the third the techniques of togidashi-e, hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, the three panels separated by two gold fundame strips, the whole in a togidashi-e frame, fitted wood box
