A SHIKISHIBAKO [poem paper box]
Signed Jikan Ganbun, Edo Period (19th Century)
Of almost square form, the cedar wood shikishibako with overhanging cover, decorated with two mushrooms and a snail inlaid in high relief over the heavily grained wood, all three of carved wood, with a sheet of pewter pressed tightly over the surface, the shell of the snail lacquered in brown over the pewter, copper and shakudo inlaid ants crawl around them, the underside of the cover inlaid with a carved wood pine cone and another covered in thin pewter, under which lies a pine needle of tortoiseshell beside other pine needles in copper, further ants and ant holes, the signature plaque of kurogaki signed Jikan Ganbun to, pewter rims, slight crack repaired
