A MAGNIFICENT THREE-CASE SLEEVE INRO
Signed Yotte Somada Jitokusai Gyokuzan saku, Edo Period (Early 19th Century)
The outer sleeve in two parts, decorated in Somada style with brocade design inlaid in gold and shell, silver mounts and nashiji interior, the three-case inro decorated in silver, shibuichi, dark red and gold takamaki-e, with a monkey holding a peach, its eyes inlaid in horn, the reverse with a basket and four peaches, with their twigs and leaves, the basket in carved and pierced raden, the peaches in darkish red takamaki-e and the leaves and twigs on a red lacquer kin-fun-ji ground, compartment and risers nashiji, fundame rims, slight old damage to gold inlay of basket

Lot Essay

The Somada family of lacquerers is thought to have been started by Somada Kyosuke in the 18th century, and was employed for a time by the Maeda family, daimyo of Toyama in Etchu. Jitokusai Gyokuzan is known for working in a wide variety of techniques.
