The actor Yamashita Kinsaku II in the role of Iwate Gozen, the wife of Abe no Sadato in the play Otokoyama O-edo no Ishizue performed at the Kiri theatre in 11/1794.

The actor crouches beneath a flowering plum tree, the sleeves of his green over-kimono have fallen from his shoulders, signed Sharaku ga, published by Tsutaya Juzaburo, kiwame seal

Lot Essay

This is possibly the left-hand sheet of a diptych showing Ichikawa Yaozo III in the role of Saeki Kurando.

The only other recorded impression of this very rare print is held by the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
