Signed Tomotsugu, Muromachi period (15th Century)
Sugata [configuration]: honzukuri, iori mune, high shinogi, broad and even curve
Kitae [forging pattern]: flowing oitame with jifu and utsuri
Hamon [tempering pattern]: suguha of konie with variations and many small gunome ashi
Boshi [tip]: komaru with hakikake
Nakago [tang]: suriage with shallow ha-agari kurigata tip, two holes, original katte agai file marks and katte sagari file marks on the re-shaped portion
Koshirae [set of mounts]: black lacquered scabbard with mottled aogai nashiji along the sides and polished black lacquer with a regular wave formation along both edges, the fuchi-kashira and kojiri of black high-silver alloy migakiji with leafy scrolling, the tsuba of iron with a partially depleted geometric pattern in gold inlay and shakudo fukurin, the kozuka hitsu-ana lined with silver, the kogai hitsu-ana plugged with silver, the menuki in gilt bars with supported roundels with four-section rhomboid designs
Both blade and habaki fit, but imperfectly, into the koshirae
Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 63.8cm.

Lot Essay

The sword accompanied by a Hozon Token [Sword Worthy of Preserving] certificate no.342966, 28 March 1996. The scabbard accompanied by a Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu [Sword-fitting Especially Worth of Preserving] certificate no.226908, 24 February 2004. Both certificates issued by the nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword].

The blade is by one of the smiths of the Fujishima school of Kaga. It has the typical utsuri with jifu found on work of the Northern provinces.
