Signed Satsuhan shin Oku Motohira and dated Tenmyo tei-bi 8-gatsu hi [1787], Edo Period (18th Century)
Sugata [configuration]: honzukuri, iorimune, wide and slightly extended chu-kissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: itame mixed with mokume, jinie and chikei
Hamon [tempering pattern]: ko-notare with gunome, togariba nie, sunagashi and imozuru
Boshi [tip]: komaru with hakikake
Horimono [carving]: bohi on both sides
Nakago [tang]: ubu, slender and pointed end, file marks sujikai, one hole
In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard]
Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 71.2cm.
Sori [curvature]: 2cm.
Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 3.3cm.
Sakihaba [width before tip]: 2.3cm.

Lot Essay

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as the 17th Juyo Token [Important Sword] no.2806, issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword] on 4-6 July 1968.

This blade was made at the age of 34, before he received the title Yamato no kami. The funagata [boat] shaped tang is typical of his work.
