Lot Essay

Lot 16 originally formed part of the collection of Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944), sometime soldier, lawyer, and author of a best-selling satirical drama, Heavenly Discourse, published in 1927. His wife, Sara Bard Field, was a suffragette, social reformer and poet. In 1925 Wood and Field built their house 'The Cats' in Los Gatos, California, which became a gathering place for Bay Area writers, artists and political activists including Ansel Adams and Robinson Jeffers.
