Lot Essay

While attempting to explain why he didn't feel he could teach photography, Robert Frank said about his Hoboken pictures: 'I was watching a girl once [looking] at a page of my book [The Americans] ...and I was thinking, what would I have to say about those pictures that other people seem to admire, and I couldn't even say anything about it. Would she be interested that it's taken in Hoboken on a grey day? I was with my little son, and... I was hanging around there for maybe five minutes, and I took maybe fifteen pictures from different angles..." - (Alexander, 'Robert Frank,' Katalog, vol. 9, no. 4, Fall 1997, p. 33)
