Lot Essay

The present work depicts the Scottish aristocrat Hamish St. Clair Erskine. Nancy Mitford (1904-1973), the novelist, biographer and editor of Noblesse Oblige embarked on a love affair with Erskine during their time at Oxford. In 1933, after a fruitless romance with Erskine, she married Peter Rodd, the youngest son of Sir Rennell Rodd.
