The prototypes in this composition, all in the collection of the Prado, Madrid, are: (upper row, left to right) Tintoretto's Portrait of a gentleman with a gold chain, the Portrait of Andrea Navagero after Raphael, Raphael's own Portrait of a Cardinal, the Portrait of Agostino Beazzano after Raphael (the latter with that of Navagero being individual copies after the double portrait by Raphael in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, Rome), Rubens' Portrait of Sir Thomas More after Holbein; (centre row, left to right) Titian's Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist, The Virgin and Child with Saints George and Catherine and Mater Dolorosa; (lower row, left to right), Parmigianino's Portrait of Pier Maria Rossi, Van Dyck's Portrait of the Painter Marten Ryckaert and Titian's Portrait of the Emperor Charles V.
