Lot Essay

The prototype probably dates from 1594-5 and is last recorded in a private collection in Germany (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere (1568-1625): Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Cologne, 1979, p. 558, no. 8a, fig. 92b).
