The original painting by Titian was commissioned by Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, and is now in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, since 1746; Giorgio Vasari records the original as being in the Duke's study in his Vite. In 1598 Cesare d'Este took the picture to Modena, where it was sold to the Electors of Saxony in 1746 together with numerous other paintings from the d'Este collection.
