Lot Essay

The present lot is a remarkable collection of over sixty drawings of the members of Dutch Houses of Parliament which was executed in 1880. The collection provides a unique overview of the political landscape in the Netherlands towards the turn of the century. The distinctive traits of each of the politicians are depicted in an almost charicatural manner. The illustrated drawings show:

1. Count R.J. Schimmelpenninck, Conservative, 'Baker'
2. Mr J.G. Patijn, Liberal
3. Mr J.H. Donner, ARP, 'Afgescheiden'
4. Dr R.P. Mees, Liberal
5. Mr F. Lieftinck, 'Dominee'
6. Mr P.G.J. Van der Schrieck, Catholic, 'Generaal'
7. Mr A. Van der Hoeven, 'Dierenvriend'
8. Mr Ch.J.F. Mirandolle, Liberal, 'Vice president'
