Lot Essay

The palm-flowered trestles with voluted trusses terminating in bacchic lion-paws are inspired by marble antiquities such as the table and seat trestles illustrated in C.H.Tatham Etchings Representing the Best Examples of Ancient Ornamental Architecture Drawn from the Originals in Rome and other Parts of Italy, during the years 1794, 1795 and 1796, London, 1799 (4th ed. 1826). Related marble seat-trestles are in the Vatican and Louvre (G.M.A.Richter The Furntiure of the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans, 1966, figs 503 and 504).
