Lot Essay

This Grecian triumphal-arched, laurel-wreathed and palm-flowered pediment is inspired by cippus altars, and reflects the antique fashion promoted in the mid 18th century by the architect G.B.Piranesi and popularised in the early 19th century by T.Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration 1807.
