Lot Essay

The tablet's central figures of Bacchus and Ariadne derive from an antique sarcophagus illustrated in A.L.Millin's Galerie Mytholoogique; Recueil de Monuments, Paris, 1811 and H. Moses A Collection of Antique Vases, Altars, Paterae, Tripods, Candelabra, Sarcophagi, 1814 (pl.140).
