This bas relief tablet evokes virtue's triumph with the heroic Hercules attending a sword-bearing figure personifying virtue, and ignoring the offerings of a female personifying vice. This relates to the 'Choice of Hercules' legend as told in Xenophaus Memoirs of Socrates; before his Labours, Hercules was approached by two beutiful women, one of whom offered him a 'Life of Easy and Pleasure' the other 'Duty and Labour'. A related tablet featured on a chimneypiece supplied for Saltram, Devon in 1768 by the sculptor Thomas Carter the Younger (d. 1795) (W.D. John, Paktong, 1970, fig 28). A similar plaque is also featured on a chimneypiece at Newton Park House, Co. Dublin (Christie's sale on the premises Newton Park House, 20 September 1976 lot 77).
