Lot Essay

This handsome grate with its Grecian bacchic lion feet and Elizabethan spiralled pillars is likely to be the one acquired in the early l9th century by the eminent ethnologist Dr. James Cowles Pritchard for the Elizabethan parlour at The Red Lodge, Bristol (of circa 1577-85), (illustrated in situ in Country Life, 21st November 1903 p.722 )
