Lot Essay

The elegantly serpentined chimneypiece, with rose-centred floral cartouche, is designed in the French/antique manner that was revived in the 1830s as the Louis Quatorze style. Its herm-trussed pilasters terminate in acanthus-wrapped volutes and support winged and garlanded busts of Aurora, Homers rosy-fingered dawn-deity and sister of the sun-deity Apollo.
