Lot Essay

The tripod candelabrum with tazza-capped pillar on altar pedestal reflects the antiquarian Roman taste promoted by the architect G.B.Piranesi's Vasi, candelabra, cippi, sarcophagi, tripodi, Rome, 1778, and popularised in the early l9th century by various publications such as by J.N.L.Durand Recueil et parallele des edifices.., 1802; T.Hope, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 and H.Moses Collection of Antique Vases, Altars, Paterae, Tripods, Candelabra, Sarcophagi etc., 1814.
Related candelabra recorded in the early l9th century in the collections of the connoisseur Thomas Hope at Duchess Street, London and Deepdene, Surrey are now in the Lady Lever Art Gallery (G.Waywell, The Lever and Hope Sculptures, Berlin, 1986).
