Lot Essay

In 1914 the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with Howard Mansfield acting as adviser, purchased several hundred prints, mostly works by Hiroshige (including the one offered here), directly from the Spaulding brothers in Boston. The museum paid $17,000 for the group. The Spaulding Collection is today housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
