Edo period (18th-19th century), signed Koma Kansai [Koma Kansai II (1767-1835)]
Lacquered in gold, silver, red and brown takamaki-e and gold and silver hiramaki-e with kirikane, hirame and uchikomi highlights with a large octopus seizing a monkey trying to escape to a nearby rock, the reverse with another monkey watching the scene from the safety of a rocky ledge, the octopus's eyes inlaid in glass; interiors fundame and nashiji; fitted with a stag antler ojime carved as a monkey in a basket
