A Lacquer Stacking Picnic Box
Edo period (19th century)
With two shaped two-tier stacking boxes, one decorated on the cover with a sailboat laden with cargo and one with a distant shoreline with pine trees below Mount Fuji designed in gold, silver and black hiramaki-e, simulated pewter, hirame, nashiji and gold foil on a black-lacquer ground, the sides of the boxes decorated with lozenges of cherry blossoms and pine needles; interiors of boxes red with fundame edges; set on a matching stand with three cabriole legs
