James Deville (d. 1846) was among other individual makers such as Humphrey Hopper, Robert Shout and Francis Harenberg who were producing figurative lamps in plaster, borrowing models and motifs from the connoisseur-designer, Thomas Hope. Deville was described in the Gentleman's Magazine as 'a plaster figure-maker, lamp manufacturer and phrenologist in the Strand'
