Lot Essay

The carved decoration on this table is influenced by examples from the mid-16th century, notably the work of Hughes Sambin, who used fruit garlands and winged chimerae to embellish his work. His book, Oeuvres de la diversité des termes, published in 1572, was influential in developing a distinctively French style of Renaissance ornament. An unattributed table showing many similarities in design to the present example is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, Le Meuble Français et Européen du Moyen Âge a Nos Jours, Paris, 1991.
