Lot Essay

A similar cartel clock, featuring Cupid being driven in a chariot by Love's doves is signed Caffreri, illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopidie de la Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siecle , Paris, 1997, p.100, fig. B.

The Bethune escapement was designed by the Chevalier de Bethune in 1727 and comprises two pallets on individual arbors, joined by a pin and slot arrangement.
