Lot Essay

Pierre-Alexandre Schoenewerk (b.1820, d.1885) was prevented from exhibiting and competing at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts because of his German descent, but he did exhibit at the the Salon between 1841 and 1847. After 1848 he concentrated more on mythological subjects, of which this bronze is a good example.
The fondeur P. M. Delafontaine, active around 1860, produced work of the highest quality and was a chief competitor of the Barbedienne foundry during the second half of the 19th century.
