Lot Essay

Painted and varnished finishes in black and gold were characteristic of Bareilly, which, as early as the 1820's was renowned for the production of western-style furniture. The decoration incorporated both western floral designs and Chinese export lacquer-inspired schemes. A lacquered box made at Bareilly was shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
