Lot Essay

Conceived in 1840-1, Lion qui marche and its pendant, Tigre qui marche, are among Barye's most reproduced works. Although over 100 casts of the former and 60 of the latter were made during the sculptor's lifetime, the popularity of the models and proliferation of casts may be credited directly to Barbedienne, who edited both, numerously and in large quantities, from Barye's death, right up to the Second World War.
