Lot Essay

Nero (AD 54-68) became emperor of Rome at the age of sixteen, succeeding his step-father Claudius. He is notorious not only for the burning of Rome, but also the murder of his mother, step-brother and first wife. Nero alienated his subjects and the senatorial elite, and after being deposed committed suicide, with the words 'What artist dies in me'.
