Lot Essay

A feature of Angus McBean's studio at 53 Endell Street, Covent Garden was a large fish tank which was framed by this picture frame. After returning from a holiday in 1950, McBean discovered his collection of fish had expired and asked Hobdell to paint this classical scene as a replacement.
