The original model for the present clock was supplied by Gerard-Jean Galle (d. 1846) to the Royal Palace in Stockholm in 1823 (see H. Ottomeyer and P. Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986. p. 397, fig. 5.18.12). Other similar examples may be found in the Prado and at Malmaison. An earlier version, without clock movement, was acquired in 1814 by Ferdinando III and may be found in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (see M. Chiarini and S. Padovari, Gli Appartamenti di Palazzo Pitti, Florence, 1993, p. 230, fig II.39). A clock of related design is in the Spanish Royal collection, illustrated in J. Ramon Colon de Carvajal, Catalogo de Relojes del Patrimonio Nacional, Editorial Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid, 1987, p.185, no.165. Another example is illustrated in Tardy, La Pendule Francaise, Paris, 1967-1969, vol. II. pg.378.

A closely related clock sold Christie's London, 26 November 1996, lot 132, another sold Christie's New York, 31 October 2000, lot 356, and another sold Christie's, South Kensington, 14 July 2004, lot 42.
