Lot Essay

A Rhode Island native, Edward Mitchell Bannister was the first African-American artist to achieve national recognition, winning a bronze medal at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

With no formal art training, Bannister was influenced by the French artist Jean Francois Millet and painted in the spirited Barbizon School style. Cows in Pasture demonstrates Bannister's focus and fascination with nature's changing moods.
