Lot Essay

A related pattern for the chair-splats, with ribbon-tied and cusp-arched frets, was issued in 1775 in T. Malton's, Compleat Treatise on Perspective (pl. 34, fig. 131). A set of twelve Grecian-palm-flowered chairs of this present pattern, but with columnar legs, was advertised in Partridge's 1986 Summer Exhibition Catalogue.
