Lot Essay

These richly-carved chairs, elegently serpentined in the mid-18th century 'picturesque' manner, relate to 'French Chair' patterns published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed., 1762 and in Mayhew & Ince's Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762. In particular the volute-scrolled arms supported on S-scrolled trusses are featured in Mayhew'’s pattern for a 'bergere' easy-chair (ibid., pl. 60).
