Lot Essay

The parlour chairs' antique-fluted 'vase' splats are scrolled in the fashionable 1760s Grecian-lyre form, while their bowed ribbons are tied by bubbled and scalloped cartouches and reflect the 1740s 'picturesque' style as revived in George III's reign by The Chair-Maker’s Guide, 1766. This reissued Matthias Darly's, Second Book of Chairs, 1751 (see E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1990, p. 110).
