The rectangular moulded top with red leather-lined writing-surface above two mahogany-lined drawers with convex quarter-fillets, on reeded bulb-headed fluted tapering legs and toupie feet with brass caps and castors, one drawer stamped 'JOHNSTONE JEANES & CO 67 NEW BOND ST LONDON', the castors stamped 'COPE & COLLINSON PATENT STRONG', the handles original, the back edge of the top with slots for a removable gallery

Johnstone and Jeanes were noted in the Art Journal's illustrated catalogue of the London 1862 Exhibition as having been established for upwards of a century: 'its renown has been obtained not only by a good and substantial manufacture, but by continual study to introduce Art into all their works'.
