Lot Essay

Kitley, Devon, was the seat of the Bastard family since 1692, when William Bastard married Anne Pollexfen, heiress of Kitley. The original manor house was replaced by an early Georgian house, which was in turn remodelled in the 1820s for Edmund Pollexfen Bastard by the architect George Stanley Repton, son of Humphrey Repton.
The most famous resident of Kitley was Mother Hubbard, the early 19th century housekeeper, immortalised in verse by one of the family.
