Lot Essay

This portrayal of noble death has been held in high esteem over the centuries since its discovery in the grounds of the villa Ludovisi, Rome, in 1623. By the late 19th century scholars concluded that this dying solider represented a copy from a monumental larger bronze group, dedicated to Attalus I of Pergamon, to record his successful rebuttals of the Gaulish incursions.
