Lot Essay

While Hercules was an infant Juno sent two snakes into his room at night. Juno was hostile to the child because he was the offspring of her husband Jupiter and a mortal lover, Alcmene. Hercules picked the snakes up, one in each hand, and strangled them effortlessly.

Louis Kley (1833-1911) exhibited at the salon from 1853 winning a silver medal at the Exposition of 1889.
