ANDERS SPARRMAN (1748-1820)
A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, and round the World: but chiefly into the country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the year 1772, to 1776 ... translated from the Swedish original ... The second edition, corrected. London: for G. G. J. & J. Robinson, 1786. 2 volumes, 4° (275 x 220mm). Engraved frontispiece, 9 plates and one folding map. (Plates and map spotted, the map with a small tear.) Contemporary tree calf gilt, covers with decorative roll in gilt around outer edge, spines in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, green morocco in the third, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (joints of vol.I split, some damage to leather on lower cover of vol.I).
SECOND EDITION IN ENGLISH including Sparrman's account of Captain James Cook's second voyage. This work is a translation of the first volume of first edition of Sparrman's work, published in Swedish in 1783. The first edition in English was published in 1785. Although Sparrman's account of his voyage with Cook (as assistant to Johann Reinhold Forster) is included, the majority of this work is concerned with the author's travels and natural history expeditions in South Africa. London: J. Johnson, 1789. 4° (290 x 230mm). Folding engraved map, 17 engraved plates (14 botanical, 2 views, 1 zoological). ('Mimosa' plate shaved with loss to imprint and with small sections of facing page adhering to surface, some spotting and offsetting of plates and map.) Contemporary half speckled calf gilt the flat spine divided into six compartments by fillets and a roll tool, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with repeat pattern made up from various neo-classical motifs.
A fine copy of the uncoloured issue of the first edition of Paterson's description of the four plant hunting trips he made for his patron, Mary Bowes, Countess of Strathmore. 'In the course of his travels the author penetrated as far as Namaqualand on the west and the Great Fish River on the south-east. Although the principal feature of the work is a description of the botanical specimens there are many interesting notes respecting the natives, with a few remarks on the Dutch Colonists' (Mendelssohn).
