FYNES MORYSON (1565-1630)
An Itinerary written by Fynes Moryson first in the Latin tongue and then translated by him into English: Containing his ten yeeres travell through the twelve dominions of Germany, Bohmerland, Sweitzerland, Netherland, Denmarke, Poland, Italy, Turky, France, England, Scotland, and Ireland. London: by John Beale, 1617. 3 parts in one volume, 2° (320 x 210mm). Double-page title. 8 woodcut illustrations, including plans of Venice, Naples, Rome and Genoa. (Wanting first leaf, blank except for signature, small tears and old creasing to title pages, some light old dampstains, final blank holed, Rr3 and 4 with 2½ inch tears affecting text area, 1½ inch tear to blank margin of 3Z2.) Early 18th-century calf, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools and rules, red speckled edges (lower joint slightly split). Provenance: J. Hamilton (signature).
FIRST EDITION. Moryson spent from 1591 to 1597 travelling through Europe and the Levant, and earned the reputation of being "a sober-minded and veracious traveller." The Latin version of his Itinerary was never published. Brunet III, 1919; Lowndes p. 1621; Pine-Coffin 5931; STC 18205.
