ALEXANDER DRUMMOND (d.1769)

Travels through different cities in Germany, Italy, Greece, and several parts of Asia, as far as the banks of the Euphrates: in a series of letters. Edited by Tobias Smollett. London: W. Strahan for the Author, 1754. 2° (358 x 235mm). Folding engraved emblematic frontispiece, 33 engraved plates, plans and maps, 11 folding. (Occasional light browning.) A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS 'QUINTESSENTIAL TRAVELOGUE OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY' (DNB). Smollett was hired by Drummond's brother to prepare the manuscript for publication - it is not known how much of the published work is Smollett's own, but he received 100 guineas for the work, so his contribution is likely to have been substantial. Atabey 363; Blackmer 497; Cobham-Jeffery, p. 16; Roehricht 1417; Weber II, 524.
