JAMES DALLAWAY (1763-1834)
Constantinople ancient and modern, with excursions to the Shores and Islands of the Archipelago and to the Troad. London: T. Bensley for T. Cadell Jnr. & W. Davies, 1797. 4° (270 x 215mm). 1p. author's advertisement at end. Engraved title with hand-tinted aquatint vignette, 9 hand-tinted aquatint plates, hand-tinted aquatint map. Contemporary speckled calf, covers with gilt roll-tool borders, the flat spine divided into six compartments, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with decoration in gilt.
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Through the influence of the fourth Earl of Bute, Dallaway was appointed physician and chaplain to Robert Liston's embassy to the Ottoman empire. 'The party left in March 1794 and travelled overland to Constantinople. Dallaway's Itinerary, published in 1805, was one of the period's most detailed reports of the Balkans. After leaving for home in October 1795, Dallaway travelled via the Greek Islands and Italy. The loss of most of his notes in transit precluded his planned continuation of Gibbon ... but [the present work] ... was well regarded in its time, helped to awaken interest in the ancient manuscripts to be found there, and contributed to the debate on the location of ancient Troy.' (DNB). Abbey Travel 392; Atabey 308; Weber II, 640.
With: WILLIAM WITTMAN. Travels in Turkey, Asia-Minor, Syria, and across the desert into Egypt during the years 1799, 1800, and 1801, in company with the Turkish Army, and the British Military Misitn. To which are annexed, observations on the plague, and on the diseases prevalent in Turkey, and a meteorological journal. London: T. Gillet for Richard Phillips, 1803. 4° (270 x 212mm). 1p. publisher's advertisements at end.
