Both works contained in a later box (some wear to box). Provenance: [?Nestor] von Schlözer (1808-1899, presentation inscription on dedication of Le Caucase Pittoresque 'A mon ami Schloezer , Gr. Gagarin', and by descent to the vendor).
GAGARIN'S FINE PLATES FROM HIS RARE SERIES LE CAUCASE PITTORESQUE AND COSTUMES DE CAUCASE, THE LATTER AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION SET. Both works, which were issued over a number of years, are rarely found complete; indeed, of the two, only one (Le Caucase pittoresque) is recorded at auction by ABPC since 1975. This work -- described by Colas as 'planches représentent des costumes très interessants pour la Géorgie' -- was published in 20 livraisons while Costumes du Caucase was intended to form part of a work depicting the scenes, landscape, customs and costumes of the Caucasus to be issued in 48 livraisons; however, Colas states that only 11 of these were issued, containing 66 plates. The recipient of this copy was a member of the von Schlözer family, whose members distinguished themselves in the field of diplomacy. It seems most probable that this was inscribed to Nestor von Schlözer (born two years earlier than Gagarin in 1808), who was the imperial Russian state council's consul in Stettin, and husband of Luise von Schlötzer and father of Leeopold Schlötzer (for whom, see the following lot).
