GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GEMELLI-CARERI (1651-1725)

Voyage du Tour du Monde, Traduit de l' Italien ... par L. M. N. Paris: chez Etienne Ganeau, 1719. 6 volumes, 12° (165 x 90mm). Titles printed in red and black, half-titles. Engraved emblematic frontispiece, portrait of the author and 59 plates (35 of fruit and plants, 7 folding). Contemporary French calf, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, volume number in gilt in the third, the others with a repeat pattern in gilt of a centrally-placed lozenge (some splitting to joints, the head of two spines slightly chipped).

FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of a work first published in Italian (Giro del Mondo del dottor D. Gio. Francesco Gemelli Careri) in Naples in 1699-1700. Careri left Italy in 1693 and travelled through Turkey, Persia and India. He then continued to Macao and on to Beijing (arriving in November 1695). The Italian Jesuit Claudio Filippo Grimaldi 'arranged an audience with the K'ang-hsi emperor, who apparently regarded Careri as some sort of emissary of the pope' (Howgego). Careri returned to Macao via Canton, then sailed for the Philippines in April 1696. After some time in Manila he left for Mexico in 1697 and then onwards, reaching Naples in December 1698. His account of his travels was evidently very popular and went through a number of editions in various languages. Cf. Howgego C40 (includes details of various other editions). (6)
