(Some browning of plates and text, occasional light soiling, wrapper stub adhering to inner margin of first title and vol. II p. 80, vol. II without final [?index] leaf, called for by Howes.) Contemporary half calf (some blackening of leather, spine label lacking, joints cracked but firm).
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Sarychev was deputy to Captain Joseph Billings, leader of the Russian expedition of 1785 to 1793, sent by Catherine II to explore the Arctic and North Pacific oceans, during which 'Alaska and the Aleutians, especially Unalaska, were first carefully charted' (Hill). This edition is an abridgement of the Russian original, published in St. Petersburg, 1802. Hill 1527; Howes S-115; Sabin 77126.
