Frank Henry Houlder (1867-1936) was a Buenos Aires based shipping magnate who offered Shackleton valuable help throughout the Endurance expedition. Houlder's shipping line had been started by his father in the 1860s and the Argentine connection began with contracts to ship Argentine meat to the U.K. in 1881, to ship phosphates from the Pacific, and to supply materials for port works from the U.K. to Buenos Aires. He became chairman of Houlder Bros., & Co. Ltd., Houlder Line Ltd., Furness Houlder Argentine Line Ltd., Houlder Estates Ltd., Estancia Houlder Curamolan Ltd., and of the South American Export Syndicate, and was a director of Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd. Tom P. Jones worked for a subsidiary of Houlder Bros. & Co. Ltd. at Rio Secco and was one of the local residents to greet Shackleton and his rescued party back in 1916, and attended the dinner for Shackleton and his men held in the rooms of the British Association of Magellanes at Punta Arenas on the night of their arrival.

There were hitherto just 5 other copies recorded of this 'de-luxe' album by Hurley ('Five albums are reputed to have been made. Hurley took one in a taxi to Buckingham Palace' J.Piggott (ed.), Shackleton, The Antarctic and Endurance, Dulwich, 2000, p.129), one reportedly in the Royal Collection, two at Dulwich College, and the Stancomb-Wills and Hussey copies: Christie's, 25 Sept. 2002, lot 363 and 23 Sept. 2004, lot 218). This fine coloured and unrecorded copy, presented to a major supporter, revises the tally to 6.
