THE FIRST NEWS OF SHACKLETON'S DEATH relayed by Wilkins, the expedition zoologist. The Quest arrived at Grytviken on 4 January 1922. 'Sir Ernest was in excellent spirits; our real work was about to commence and he was very enthusiastic ... He dined ashore and came on board and to bed shortly after ten p.m. At 2 a.m he called the officer on watch ... and asked for a draught to relieve a pain in the shoulder. The draught was prepared, but before he had time to drink it he was dead.' Wilkins confirms their intention of continuing the expedition under the command of Frank Wild. The letter was stamped 'not for publication over my name', in accordance with the copyright on news publication signed by Shackleton. AN EVOCATIVE LETTER DETAILING THE NIGHT OF SHACKLETON'S DEATH.
