SIR GEORGE HUBERT WILKINS (1888-1958)
Typed letter signed ('Geo[.] H[.] Wilkins'), to the secretary of the Explorers Club in New York, Shackleton-Rowlett Expedition, Grytuik Harbour, South Georgia, 12 Januaury 1922, on paper with printed heading of 'Quest R.Y.S.', typed endorsement ('Not for publication over my name') signed (with initials) in upper left corner, one page, 4to (a few words faint but legible, slightly discoloured at edges, traces of tape at top and bottom, tiny splits in one vetical fold).
THE FIRST NEWS OF SHACKLETON'S DEATH relayed by Wilkins, the expedition zoologist. The Quest arrived at Grytviken on 4 January 1922. 'Sir Ernest was in excellent spirits; our real work was about to commence and he was very enthusiastic ... He dined ashore and came on board and to bed shortly after ten p.m. At 2 a.m he called the officer on watch ... and asked for a draught to relieve a pain in the shoulder. The draught was prepared, but before he had time to drink it he was dead.' Wilkins confirms their intention of continuing the expedition under the command of Frank Wild.
