THE HOWARD COLLECTION OF DIECASTS FOREWORD The Howard Collection is remarkable in a number of ways. The collector was a very hard working man who ran his own business, but was never afraid to get out of his office and work for much of the time on the shop floor alongside his staff. He was astute, intuitive and focused, but lived a simple, rather ascetic life. His indulgence was to focus on his toy collection: he applied the same seriousness and dedication to his hobby as to his professional life. Many collectors will accept an item because it is available, despite faults. He did not. He bought from ten or fifteen dealers and from fairs and had an absolutely clear idea of the piece he wanted and the exceptional condition that it needed to be in. He achieved his aim through careful study of articles in Model Collector in the late 1980s by such luminaries as Mike and Sue Richardson, Andrew Ralston and Anders Clausager. He then appears to have sought out the best examples available of the models described. He kept detailed 'Wants' lists and knew exactly what he was looking for. This catalogue is a tribute to his knowledge, dedication and determination. DINKY
